It is about the struggle, the inner pain of the poor in post-independence Africa. The negative impact of this sorry situation on the family unit is depicted through a number of characters among them Juhudi and Teremo. Shortly before Juhudi died he painfully told a journalist (Kende) he was afraid his son would never understand why he was not able to provide for his family. By the time of his death his wife had left him. Touched by the death of Juhudi, Kende decided to write a book to address Juhudi''s concerns. Through Teremo the novel shows the suppression of the poor Africans by fellow rich Africans. Teremo, a mother of a daughter (Noria) born following a rape incident, had to leave her ailing mother and settle in the city where she started a bar business. She made friends with many and invited some of her village mates to the city including Biketi, the man who had raped her. Her bar served as the meeting point for the urban poor. Her daughter, a brilliant girl, would help her in the business thereby being vulnerable to all manner of abuses from patrons. In her attempt to make ends meet Noria became promiscuous and at some point this involved the same person who had raped her mother. She didn''t know this until long after the death of her mother. Her mother committed suicide shortly after the burial of Juhudi and after executing the ''ultimate revenge'' on the rapist. Read Teremo''s death note to her daughter: |Noria,Take it easy girl as it was meant to be. This was no accident but a well thought out action. I had to do it. I believe you are the stronger of us two and that you will be able to cope with the situation. Let no one dare term it an act of cowardice but of sincere love. I had to slay the enemy out of your way and take responsibility for my actions. It is the greatest and sweetest sacrifice by a mother for her daughter. With Juhudi and I gone and any other who may have gone with us, it means the good and the evil of our generation has cleared the way for a new generation, a new chapter.|How does Noria pick up the pieces following the demise of her mother? The transformation of Noria is amazing. After the death of Juhudi, Teremo and Biketi the focus shifts to the the struggle of Noria, Kende and other young people with shared identity. This group represents the second post-independence African generation. A strong bond grows between Noria and Kende. The two had met when Kende was researching on the book he wanted to write about Juhudi''s life. The night he first saw Noria she looked nothing else but a nagging street prostitute. She had offered to help Kende get to meet Biketi but she felt he was fearing her. |I am a crazy prostitute...I know you hate prostitutes but it is only this one who can show you the way.| Kende''s research ahead of writing his book on Juhudi revealed a lot that influenced his worldview. He set out to work with Noria and other young people for a purpose. Just like her mother, Noria demonstrated a big heart for people. She reached out to fellow young people from her late mother''s village of Mango. By now she had graduated as a medical doctor. When Kende''s book on Juhudi came out Noria was taken aback. |Is it true that I am a product of rape?| she asked, adding: |Is everything you have written in that book true?| Her face turned dull, sad. Juhudi''s son, Deruko, had an opportunity to meet Kende after reading his book. |I understand,| said Deruko pointing at the book. |It was not his fault. It''s beyond him.| The meeting happened at Noria''s house. Kende had just returned from abroad where he had been for some years. He was to be hosted by Noria. At some point Noria took Kende up the stairs to the room she had prepared for him. |You have such a big heart,| said Kende.|My mother always told me that sometimes you do something not for yourself but for others.| |When I grow up, I will marry you,| said Kende. |But you can''t get married to a former prostitute,| said Noria.|We all have some dark past...|
